Broad Street Eats
Overview
Broad Street Eats is a nutrition & wellness program designed for dancers on the college dance team, Broad Street Baadshahz (BSB).
As an aspiring Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and a dancer on the team, I decided to use my education to provide dietetic counseling to our athletes.
The Problem
Being a part of college athletics can provide numerous challenges. Balancing long practices, inconsistent meals, stress, injury prevention, and academics can be truly challenging.
Official college sports teams often provide their athletes with access to dietitians, physical trainers, gyms, and meal plans.
BSB is a Philadelphia-wide college club that competes in nationwide competitions. While we may be a strong contending team, this often comes at the expense of our own health.
This is why I have decided to step up as the team's Health, Safety, & Wellness Manager, in order to emulate the resources provided to official college sports teams.
What is Broad Street Eats?
One-on-one Counseling — Personalized Support
Team Workshops & Demonstrations — Group Education
Educational Resources — Handouts, Tools, Questionnaires, and Check-ins
Individualized Meal Plans — Tailored to Culture, Budget, Schedule, Preferences, and Goals
Wellness Extras — Stretching, Injury Prevention, Exercise, and Mental Health
How is it Different?
Many people believe that dietetic counseling means telling them what to eat in the form of meal plans. As a Dietetic student, I understand the various influences on food and the barriers to behavior change. That is why Broad Street Eats tackles various aspects of wellness to bring about holistic care plans for dancers.
These plans are developed alongside the dancers and are adapted as needed through feedback from the athlete. This is not a program that entails torture and restricting the already stressed-out athletes; it focuses on fueling performances and health.
Impact & Value
This type of support will help bring out the best in our team, allowing dancers to feel energized and properly fueled for practice. It is also a way for me to apply my education to my peers and take on counseling and leadership roles.
With this type of support, members can start to develop life-changing skills to take with them when they leave this team.
Nutrition is not taught; it is modeled, and through Broad Street Eats, we are providing members with life-long skills to live healthy and happy.
